Founded in September 1999, StreetSquash is an after-school youth enrichment program that combines academic tutoring with squash instruction, community service, and one-on-one mentoring. Working with 140 boys and girls, ages 7 - 17 from Harlem, New York for a six-year period, the program's goals are: to improve academic performance; to develop an ethic of hard work and commitment; to boost self-confidence; to increase school attendance.

Overall, the StreetSquash mission is to provide consistent and reliable support to the children, families and schools in Harlem. By exposing these children to a variety of new experiences and by maintaining high standards, StreetSquash aims to help each child realize his or her academic and personal potential.

Volunteer Opportunities

After-School Tutoring
Possibly the most important facet of the StreetSquash program is the academic support we provide to our students. As an after-school tutor, you will not only help students with their homework and test preparation, but you will also have the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with some really fantastic young people.

After-school tutors are needed at:
- Columbia University (116th Street and Broadway) on Mondays through Thursdays from 3:15pm to 6pm

- The Harvard Club (27 West 44th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues) on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:30pm to 6pm

- West Side YMCA (5 West 63rd Street, between Central Park West and Broadway) on Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30-6pm

Squash Instruction
If you are a squash player, we need you! Teaching squash skills and supervising matches is a really fun way to get to know our students. Squash volunteers are needed at:

- Columbia University (116th Street and Broadway) on Mondays through Thursdays from 3:15pm to 6pm, as well as Saturdays from (10am – 4pm).

Weekend Volunteers
On weekends we often need volunteers to help chaperone community service and cultural outings. Previous outings have included college visits, the Paul Kasmin gallery in Chelsea, the Riverside Community Garden, St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen and the Dewitt Nursing Home.
