| Clean Sanctuary Campaign Join Friends and the Hudson River Park Trust in our efforts to help care for the 400+ acres of water in Hudson River Park’s Estuarine Sanctuary. The “Clean Sanctuary Campaign” has been created to remove debris from the river, as floatables and flotsam arrive daily with the tide and through thirty combined sewage outfalls that discharge into the river on rainy days. This debris is unsuitable for the reserve because it clogs beaches, settles to the benthic (river bottom) environment, and causes unhealthy food foraging among shorebirds. Friends has arranged monthly weekend cleanups from April through September with Hudson River Park. Cleanups will take place at 9am at the Gansevoort Peninsula just south of 14th Street and the Park will provide skimmers, telescoping hook poles, and rolling debris carts to remove flotsam and floatables as they arrive. Friends will provide water, coffee and donuts to participating volunteers. Volunteers must be 18 years of age, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Sturdy footwear with deep treads, and long pants required as there is some scrambling over slippery rocks. Be sure to come prepared for the weather. Ad provided by Idealist.org |
