Background: The Quaker United Nations Offices (QUNO) in New York and Geneva seek to forward the peace-making and humanitarian work of the United Nations and to interpret matters of the UN from a Quaker perspective. These offices are sponsored by the Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC), a Quaker organization with general consultative status as an international non-governmental organization at the UN, and administered in New York by the American Friends Service Committee and in Geneva by Quaker Peace and Social Witness (QPSW).
QUNO NY was established in 1947 and over the years has focused on a broad range of UN issues of concern to Friends. These have included disarmament, human rights, sustainable development and international security issues. Currently, the work of QUNO NY is focused on supporting the ability of the UN to carry out its peace building mandate. Attention is given to particular conflict areas around the world and how institutions within the multilateral system can act to end the scourge of war. QUNO uses quiet diplomacy and issue vanguarding as principle methods for moving issues forward and bringing underrepresented voices into negotiations at the international policy level.
Summary of Responsibilities: Within the program norm of collaborative decision-making, cooperation, and support, the Coordinator for Finance and Administration carries out the day-to-day aspects of the Quaker UN Office and Quaker House management and administration. As such, the Coordinator for Finance and Administration is responsible for the financial management and record keeping for the QUNO program and Quaker House and works in conjunction with the QUNO Director on budgets. The Coordinator for Finance and Administration monitors the functioning of the office and Quaker House to ensure smooth and efficient daily operations in support of QUNO programs and events. The Coordinator for Finance and Administration also serves as QUNO Personnel Liaison and supports QUNO outreach through use of the website and publications. S/he possesses excellent organizational skills, close attention to detail and is a skilled problem solver. As Coordinator for Finance and Administration, s/he has the ability to work with people of different backgrounds and cultures, and provide oversight and direction for operational tasks within the office and Quaker House.
Responsibilities:
1. Manage QUNO office and Quaker House financial components.
2. Manage and maintain general systems and functions of QUNO office.
3. Manage and maintain Quaker House general systems, functions and physical plant.
4. Supervise Quaker House Housekeeper and Quaker House Custodian.
5. Act as QUNO Personnel Liaison.
6. Manage logistics for Quaker UN Committee and special events.
7. Manage communications and outreach activities for QUNO.
Qualifications:
1. Compatibility and familiarity with the Quaker values and testimonies that underpin QUNO's work and methods, and the ability to represent them to others. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns and considerations of the Religious Society of Friends world-wide.
2. A Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and/or Accounting.
3. Five years of financial/accounting experience and office management and administrative experience. Service in the non-profit sector preferred.
4. Demonstrated organizational and problem solving skills; ability to maintain accurate records, understand interrelatedness of overall program.
5. Ability to take initiative and work independently within agreed-upon responsibilities with a minimum of supervision.
6. Good judgment and the ability to work with confidential or sensitive information.
7. Experience supervising staff and providing team leadership.
8. Fluency in written and spoken English and excellent writing skills. Experience taking minutes.
9. Knowledge of computer systems and programs, in particular: Microsoft Word, Excel, Access. Quicken.
10. Ability to develop understanding of and to work with people of differing backgrounds and cultures.
11. Adaptability and willingness to work under periodic pressure and with frequent interruptions.
12. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
13. Ability to attend occasional weekend and/or evening meetings and work beyond regular hours as required by position.
Compensation: Salary Range 14 (plus 10% cost-of-living differential for New York City) - Exempt - Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term-life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker's compensation and Social Security.
